Yoast SEO 28.8 adds agent abilities: sitemap changes need oversight

SEO automation can now change site-wide configuration

Yoast released Yoast SEO 28.8 on October 27, 2026, adding abilities for agents to toggle selected site-wide features and update Site representation. An ability is a registered WordPress Abilities API operation callable under the relevant permissions. This October 28 report concerns an operational capability, not a new ranking algorithm.

Site owners and agencies connecting agents to WordPress should review their permissions. Reading an SEO score differs substantially from changing the whole site’s sitemap or structured data. Define approvals and recovery before enabling writes.

The settings affect different public outputs

The release lists abilities for llms.txt, Open Graph data, Schema Aggregator, Schema Framework, X card data and XML sitemaps, plus Site representation updates. Availability still depends on the applicable feature and product edition; registering an ability does not unlock a paid feature.

Sitemaps support URL discovery, social metadata shapes shared-link previews, and schema describes entities and content using structured data. These are distinct outputs. Disabling one is not a harmless score adjustment simply because the controls share a settings screen.

Friday Works opened Yoast SEO 28.8 on WordPress 7.1.3 in an isolated sample environment on October 28, inspecting Site features and registered ability metadata. This verifies the version, interface and registered operations, not an agent execution, a live customer configuration change or a search-performance result.

WordPress 7.0 is now the minimum

Version 28.8 raises the minimum supported WordPress version to 7.0. Older sites should assess theme and plugin compatibility and backups before scheduling upgrades. Do not force installation because of the SEO label or assume a new tool repairs an outdated platform.

Test an authorized copy of the site, recording WordPress, PHP and relevant extensions. Validate business-critical pages, canonical URLs, schema, sitemaps, multilingual behavior and social previews. A working administration page does not prove that public HTML remains correct.

AI image alt text belongs to a specific product setup

The release also prepares AI-generated product-image alt text for Yoast WooCommerce SEO 17.0, including an Image alt text tab in that product’s bulk editor. Installing the free base Yoast SEO 28.8 plugin does not establish access to the complete feature. Check the actual extension, version and entitlement.

Alt text should describe the real image and its function in context. Human review still needs to check the product model, color and visible details in an AI suggestion. Avoid keyword stuffing or fluent descriptions of a different product. This article does not substitute an untested paid WooCommerce screen for the base plugin actually inspected.

Restrict writes and validate the resulting website

Friday Works recommends starting with read operations, then testing writes on a sample site with a backup. For global settings, record before/after values, requester, reviewer and reason. Untrusted page or document text is not authorization to change administrative configuration.

After a sitemap change, check the actual endpoint and appropriate inclusion of important URLs. After representation or schema changes, inspect public HTML and compare entity names, URLs, logos and types with the real business. Use suitable validation tools rather than treating an API success response as complete proof.

The abilities may reduce repetitive administration, but demand and benefits need measurement in a defined workflow. Yoast 28.8 does not guarantee improved rankings or traffic. A bounded, reviewed experiment with a change log is more useful than immediately granting an agent control over all SEO settings.
